Francesco Profumo è nato a Savona nel 1953. Nel 1977 si è laureato in ingegneria elettrotecnica presso il Politecnico di Torino. Dal 1978 al 1984, ha lavorato come ingegnere progettista per il Centro Ricerca e Sviluppo della Società Ansaldo a Genova.
Nel settembre 2003, il Prof. Profumo diventa Preside della facoltà di Ingegneria e nell’ottobre del 2005 ricopre l’incarico di Rettore del Politecnico di Torino.
Da agosto 2011 è Presidente del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, dal 16 novembre Ministro dell'Istruzione, dell'Università e della Ricerca.
È stato “Visiting Professor” al Dipartimento di Ingegneria Elettrica della University of Wisconsin – Madison (Stati Uniti) nel periodo 1986/1988, al Dipartimento di Ingegneria Elettrica e Informatica della Nagasaki University (Giappone) nel periodo 1996/1997, al Dipartimento di Ingegneria Elettrica della Czhech Technical University di Praga (Repubblica Ceca) nel 1999 e al Dipartimento di Ingegneria Elettrica della Università di Cordoba (Argentina) nel 2004 e nel 2005.
I suoi interessi scientifici riguardano la conversione dell’energia, i componenti elettronici di potenza, sistemi innovativi nel campo dell’elettronica di potenza, sistemi integrati elettronici/elettromeccanici, azionamenti elettrici ad alta prestazione, nuove strutture di sistemi elettronici, sistemi per il condizionamento della potenza con utilizzo di celle a combustibile.
Ha pubblicato oltre 250 lavori su riviste scientifiche internazionali e sugli atti di conferenze internazionali. E’ revisore di diverse riviste scientifiche: IEEE Transactions on Industry Applicatons, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, IEE Proceedings – Part B an e la rivista EPE.
É membro attivo dell’ IEEE-IAS Drives Committee, è stato Chairman dello stesso Comitato (2004/2005) ed è editore dell’ IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications (2002/2003) e membro del Consiglio di Amministrazione dello IEEE PELS.
È membro attivo di molti Comitati Tecnici di Conferenze Internazionali nei campi dell’elettronica di potenza e dell’automazione. È stato il Technical Co-Chairman della Conferenza del PCC ’02 ad Osaka (Giappone). Nel 2006 è stato Technical Co-Chairman della Conferenza IPEMC ’06 a Shangai (Cina). È membro del Consiglio di Amministrazione dell’EPE Association.
Francesco Profumo ha vinto il premio per il miglior secondo lavoro della Conferenza IEEE-IAS (Stati Uniti) nel 1991 e nel 1997, il premio per il miglior lavoro della Conferenza IEEE-IAS (Stati Uniti) nel 1992 e della Conferenza IPEC del 2005 in Giappone.
Nel luglio del 2000, è stato insignito del Signum Aureum Facultatis Mechanicae Universitatis Miskolciensis, Univesità di Miskolc (Ungheria), nell’agosto del 2004 gli è stato conferito il titolo di Professore Onorario dall’Università di Cordoba (Argentina), nell’ottobre del 2006 ha ricevuto il Dottorato Onorario in Ingegneria dalla Technical Università di Riga (Lettonia), nell’agosto 2006 ha ottenuto il Dottorato Onorario in Ingegneria dalla Università Politecnica di Bucarest (Romania), nel giugno 2007 ha ricevuto il Dottorato Onorario in Ingegneria dalla University of Miskolc (Ungheria), nel settembre 2007 gli è stato conferito il titolo di Professore Onorario dalla Jiao Tong University, Xi An (Cina), lo stesso titolo gli è stato conferito nel settembre 2009 dalla Henan Polytechnic University di Jiaozuo (Cina) e nell’ottobre 2009 ha ottenuto il Dottorato Onorario dalla Politechnica di Tirana (Albania).
Tra gli altri riconoscimenti: il China Awards della Fondazione Italia-Cina nel 2009, il Certificate of Appreciation della Fulbright Commission nel 2009, la Orden Universidad Javeriana della Javeriana University di Bogotà (Colombia) nel 2010, l’Escudo de Oro dalla Università di Antiochia (Colombia) nel 2010.
Inoltre, è stato insignito del Lion d’Oro a Torino nel 2008, del Premio Valdo Fusi nel 2011 e del Premio Guido Carli nel 2011.
È inoltre membro del Comitato di selezione del Premio ENI.
È stato il Chairman del G8 University Summit 2009, tenutosi in Italia nel 2009 ed è Presidente di Columbus (Associazione di 55 Università europee e latinoamericane).
Il Prof. Profumo è presidente del Consiglio di Amministrazione del Politecnico di Torino dal 2005.
È stato membro del Consiglio di Amministrazione della Unicredit Private Bank (2008/2010), del Sole 24 Ore (2007/2009) e di Fidia Spa (2007/2010).
Dal 2011 ad oggi, è membro del Consiglio di Amministrazione di Fidia Spa, del Consiglio di Amministrazione di Telecom e di Pirelli.
Dal 2011 ad oggi, è membro del Comitato Consultivo Divisionale di Unicredit Private Banking.
Inoltre, è membro dell’Advisory Board di Innogest Fund and di Reply s.p.a.
Il Prof. Profumo è membro dell’Accademia delle Scienze dal 2007 e membro dell’Accademia Europea – Sezione Fisica ed Ingegneria dal 2010.
È ingegnere professionista iscritto all’albo italiano.

Francesco Profumo (M’88-SM’90) was born in Savona, Italy, in 1953. He graduated in Electrical Engineering from the Politecnico di Torino, Italy, in 1977. Since 1978 to 1984, he worked as Senior Engineer for the R&D Ansaldo Group in Genova (Italy).
In 1984 he joined the Department of Electrical Engineering of the Politecnico di Torino, where he was Associate Professor till 1995. He is Professor of Electrical Machines and Drives at Politecnico di Torino and Adjunct Professor at University of Bologna.
Since September 2003, Dr. Profumo was the Dean of the Engineering Faculty at the Politecnico di Torino and since October 2005 he is the Rector of the Politecnico di Torino.
Since August 2011 he has been appointed as President of CNR (National Research Council), from November 16 Prof. Profumo is the Minister of Education, University and Research.
He was Visiting Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA) in the years 1986-88, at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of Nagasaki University (Japan) (years 1996-97), at the Department of Electrical Engineering of Technical University of Prague (Czech Republic) (year 1999) and at the Department of Electrical Engineering of Technical University of Cordoba (Argentina) (years 2004 and 2005).
His fields of interest are power electronics conversion, high power devices, applications of new power devices, integrated electronic/electromechanical design, high response speed servo drives, new electrical machines structures, power conditiong systems for fuel cells applications.
He published more than 250 papers in International Conferences and Technical Journals. He is reviewer of several technical journals: IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, IEE Proceedings – Part B and EPE Journal.
Dr.Profumo is an active member of the IEEE-IAS Drives Committee and he served as Chairman of the same Committee (2004-2005) and Editor of IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications (2002-2003). He was also AdCom member of the IEEE PELS.
He is member of the Technical Program Committee of several International Conferences in the Power Electronics and Motor Drives field and he was the Technical Co-Chairman of the PCC’02 in Osaka (Japan) in 2002. In 2006 he was the Technical Co-Chairman of the Conference IPEMC’06 in Shanghai (China). He is member of the Board of Directors of EPE Association.
Dr.Profumo won the IEEE-IAS second prize paper in 1991(USA) and in 1997 (USA), the IEEE-IAS first prize paper in 1992 (USA) and the JIEE-IPEC first prize paper in 2005 (JAPAN).

Since 2011 to day, Dr. Profumo is member of the Administration Board of Fidia s.p.a., of the Administration Board of Telecom and of the Administration Board of Pirelli.
Since 2011 to day, he is member of the Division Committee of the Private Banking of Unicredit Banca.
Prof. Profumo is also member of the Advisory Board of the Innogest Fund and of the Reply S.p.a.
He is member of the Academy of Science in Italy (since 2007) and member of the Academia Europaea - Physics and Engineering Section since 2010.
